There are nearly 1.2 million vineyards in Spain,making it the country with the largest area of cultivated grapevines in theworld (more than 15% of the world's total). However, Spainis only third in the world in terms of production, behind Italy and France. Spaniards drink an average 38 litres of wine peryear per person and Spainis the ninth largest net consumer of wine in the world.
Production reports from the 2008/2009 harvest indicate that a total 41.6million hectolitres of vitiviniculture produce were obtained; of which a total36 million hectolitres are wine.
